MY Opportunity Purpose

The MY Opportunity Foundation considers education to be a vital element for the long term development of all societies. Most orphan teens in Kazakhstan, our initial focus country, are sent off to trade school at age 15 or 16. While they learn honest trades like sewing, cooking, mechanics, life will always be difficult for them. Life after trade school can be very overwhelming for an young adult orphan afloat in the world alone. A select few teens from the orphanage are sent to receive a university education. A girl sent off to University is especially at risk, because she has led such a sheltered life in an institution outside the village, with no parent, no family setting, and away from the normal rhythms of life.

The statistics for failure among the children once they are truly on their own are alarming. Boys are often forced into criminal activity, simply because they must eat. If a girl doesn't become pregnant by the first boy who tells her he loves her, she is often tricked into prostitution and then she's trapped. Sometimes we hear about a teen who takes her life, because she is so scared to face what is beyond the orphanage--the only home she has ever known. There is no safety net in Kazakhstan. In the U.S., we have disability, social security, food stamps, homeless shelters, child support, TANF, low cost medical clinics, food banks, women's shelters and more. In Kazakhstan, where the winters can reach -40 F, it is a common sight to see an elderly woman selling sunflower seeds on the sidewalk in winter for her income. 

Our goal is to change that trend and provide hope and direction in an atmosphere of love. We do this by providing scholarships, life skills training, English language training, and emotional support for these teen orphans who must soon find their way in the world. MY Opportunity works to create an anchor in life for these children, giving them a connection to a future they cannot envision themselves. We embrace the principles of a coaching culture, promoting emotional intelligence and other forms of self sufficiency, building community and personal growth.

MY Opportunity Foundation is committed to assisting teenagers who will age out of an orphanage system abroad by providing them solid life skills training that give them tools they can effectively utilize as they enter adulthood.

MY Opportunity Vision

The organizational Heart Virtue of MY Opportunity Foundation is Compassion. We will no longer tolerate a world that casually adds a teen orphan suicide, prostitute, or criminal to the statistics. We are committed to living in a world where Compassion is transformed into Action, and every orphan has an opportunity to succeed. We will not rest until every teen orphan knows that someone, somewhere, loves them and that they have every opportunity to have a bright and healthy future.

We cannot stop the unending stream of children filling the orphanages in any society. We cannot adopt them all. We know love is not enough. However, we CAN work within the orphanage system to teach these orphans, OUR teens, tools for living a productive life and to become successful members of the global community, ultimately leading to long term security, steady income and self worth.

The key components to our success strategy are three-fold: 1) Financial scholarships so orphans can complete their education without hardship, 2) English proficiency, which assures an orphan a better job in their home country, and 3) Spending a summer in the United States with a host family will change an orphan teen's view of the world in a way that nothing else can.

"Amerika" is still the Land of Opportunity to these orphans, and an extended stay in our country will plant the seed of possibility within them that will never die.
